Advocacy
Lasting change starts with policies, governance and funding systems that work for communities who need it most.
At Tree Aid, we combine practical experience on the ground with targeted advocacy, using evidence from our programmes to influence how communities are supported to adapt, innovate and thrive in the face of the climate crisis, worsening desertification, land and forest degradation.
Our advocacy
Our work spans national, regional and international levels, amplifying local voices, sharing expertise and promoting practical, community led models for land restoration and climate resilience across Africa.
By engaging in forest and land governance discussions — and in climate and carbon finance conversations — while working closely with governments and development partners, we advocate for governance and funding models that genuinely empower local communities.
This isn’t just about dollars and cents; it’s about ensuring the people closest to the land have the resources and authority to restore and manage it, nurturing both their environment and their communities. We believe that those who live with the land every day should have the power and resources to steward its future.
Our areas of focus
Climate finance
Only a small portion of climate funding reaches communities restoring land on the ground.
There are critical gaps in how agriculture and nature-based solutions are funded. We advocate for reforming climate finance systems, so they are more accessible and accountable to those most affected by the climate crisis.
Carbon finance
The voluntary carbon market presents a major opportunity to drive funding towards dryland restoration.
We’re calling for funders to scale investment that is high quality, equitable and community led.
Forest/land tenure and governance
Halting and reversing desertification, land and forest degradation across dryland regions requires local access and control for rural communities over their natural resources.
When communities and governments work together, restoration efforts are more inclusive, effective and lasting. We’re using our work and evidence from solutions on the ground to scale recognition, protection and support for local communities’ forest and land tenure and governance.
