About us
At Tree Aid, we believe trees and people are deeply connected. More than just nature’s gift, trees are a lifeline — vital for survival, resilience and opportunity.
In parts of Africa, temperatures are rising at 1.5 times the global average and trees are disappearing from landscapes where they once thrived. With the soil losing its fertility, people are struggling to grow enough food to eat.
We work where trees are needed most. By planting trees at scale and working hand in hand with people across Africa, we’re creating sustainable ways for communities to grow food, earn incomes and restore ecosystems — together.
But our mission goes beyond just planting trees. The heart of what we do is creating lasting change, for both people and the planet.

Our story began in 1987, when a group of foresters saw that in the aftermath of the Ethiopia famine, something deeper remained — the need for long-term resilience. They believed trees could provide that strength and stability. And they were right.
Nearly four decades later, the idea that trees can create lasting change has become undeniable proof of what people can achieve together.
With communities across Africa’s drylands, we’ve grown over 40 million trees, supported over 3.8 million people and brought over 260,000 hectares of land under sustainable management.
Every tree, and each hectare, benefiting a person, family or community with enriched soil, nutritious food, and sustainable tree product businesses. Proving that land and life can grow stronger together.
Before Tree Aid came here, we didn’t know the importance of trees. Tree Aid taught us how to care for and nurture trees, collect the shea nuts and produce the butter. Trees have a lot of importance for us.

Our Projects
We work across the drylands of Africa, in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Niger and Senegal, where the climate crisis is shrinking fertile land and putting pressure on the lives of more than 300 million people.
In these regions, trees are a lifeline. That’s why we partner with local communities to grow millions of them each year and to protect the land they depend on. Every project is led by the people who know their environment best, helping trees take root, supporting lasting livelihoods and protecting vital ecosystems.
