Niger
West Africa
Niger is home to hot and dry landscapes, with the Sahara in the north and grassy plains in the south. Over 80% of people here depend on natural resources to grow food and earn an income.
But Niger’s climate is on the brink. Climate shocks are increasing damage to land, forests, and landscapes, impacting rural people who are already facing conflict and poverty. Between 2000 and 2020, more than 4,800 hectares of tree cover have been lost. Without trees, soil is drying out, land is turning to desert, and families are losing the crops and incomes they rely on. At the same time, conflict has displaced more than 530,000 people, putting greater strain on the land as people, seeking safety, are forced to move.
That’s why, since 2013, we’ve been working with communities to restore ecosystems, protect forests and grow resilience through the power of trees.
